Is Rhinoplasty Painful?

                                           IS RHINOPLASTY PAINFUL?

Do you plan to have a rhinoplasty operation and get your nose fixated? However, you have concerns on how painful a rhinoplasty operation is? It is always useful to make some research before you decide for anything. Knowing that this is an health issue which is, above all, very critical, we will try to shed some light on the topic and inform you with the details of a rhinoplasty operation. We will try to demonstrate and persuade you that it is not as much painful and exaggerated as it is. Let’s start!

DO RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB) HURT?

To begin with, the nose surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so there is no pain during the surgery. However, after rhinoplasty surgery, people may feel pain when the painkillers wear off. To prevent post-surgery rhinoplasty pain, you should use pain killers prescribed by your doctor. Postoperative pain is unpredictable. But if the pain is too strong and does not stop, you should consult a doctor. Not everyone experiences the same pain after rhinoplasty as everyone has a different pain threshold.

By the way, dyspnea (breathing difficulty) may occur several days after surgery. But this situation does not cause much pain as it is temporary.

It must be emphasized that the operating area is very sensitive to any damage or impact. Therefore, one should pay extra care and attention after surgery to the nose and its surroundings. Nothing should hit or damage the operated area. In addition to that, after the procedure, swelling and bruising may occur around the eyes. These conditions can be avoided in a short time by using creams and by applying ice to bruises. Recent advances in technology have significantly reduced postoperative swelling, bruising, and pain.

All in all, nose job (rhinoplasty) surgeries are not painful surgeries. They require 7 days of plaster and 2 days of intranasal packing. After a week, plasters are taken off and you return back to your normal life.

RHINOPLASTY OPERATION TYPES AND DETAILS

As aforamentioned, rhinoplasty is applied as a result of low nose, arch appearance, correction of the angles between the nose and forehead or between the nose and lips, nose width or deformations. Nose surgery is applied not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for problems such as nasal concha, sinusitis or deviation in the respiratory tract. There are many types of rhinoplasty applied to people who have these problems. There are several types of rhinoplasty specifically designed to meet a variety of needs.

Open Operation Technique (Open Rhinoplasty)

Open rhinoplasty is the application of an incision to the outer region of the partition between the nostrils and the rhinoplasty surgery is performed with this incision. A v-shaped incision is applied to the collumella section of this incision. After this incision, the skin and the tissues under the skin are removed. In this way, the nasal bone and cartilage tissues can be easily intervened.

Open rhinoplasty recovery time is longer than closed rhinoplasty. However, in open rhinoplasty surgery, it interferes more with the nasal bone and tissues. This also offers some advantages. When this technique is applied, the nasal structure, nasal bone and cartilage tissues are more visible. For this reason, open rhinoplasty surgery is performed in revision rhinoplasty surgeries or when intervention is required on the tip of the nose.

Closed Operation Technique (Closed Rhinoplasty)

A disproportionate nose is quite uncomfortable on the face of people. For this reason, rhinoplasty is considered in order to eliminate deformities and aesthetic concerns. One of the types of rhinoplasty is closed rhinoplasty. In closed rhinoplasty, special tools are used for nasal bumps on the nose instead of any chisel or surgical hammer.

The right and left sides of the septum are cut vertically and two horizontal incisions are made in the upper part of the nose. The upper parts of the nostrils are also cut vertically. Previously removed bone grafts are placed in cuts on the septum and fixed with horizontal graft sutures to fit the shape of the nose. Finally, narrow silicone wings are placed inside the nose in order to fix the appearance of the nose.

MALE AND FEMALE RHINOPLASTY

Women often go to a plastic surgeon to fix a completely normal nose. They aspire to get a nose like some of the celebrity noses: Kate Middleton, Grace Kelly, Kate Beckinsale, Scarlett Johansson,Kim Kardashian, just to name a few.  Female patients also go to the clinics to correct the results of past plastic surgeries that they were not satisfied with. This is called revisional rhinoplasty. This treatment requires careful preparation and consideration of all the nuances of previous treatments.

Men, on the other hand, usually undergo rhinoplasty only in the most severe cases. A disfiguring injury or a severe displacement of the septum is one of them, as it interferes with normal breathing and can lead to snoring, excessive bleeding, or other unpleasant consequences. Of course, men also think about aesthetics. They may be dissatisfied with large, long noses, hooked nostrils, asymmetries, curved nasal bridges, and curved or wide tips.

However, there is a big difference in expectations. Men are interested in the fact that the result of the operation is the most unobtrusive and natural, without seams and minor changes in appearance. Women, on the other hand, are often willing to experiment with their faces.

Are there differences between male and female noses?

The difference between female and male rhinoplasty is generally explained by the anatomical features of the nose and male face.

Males have thicker skin and differ in various parts of the nose. If the nasal cartilage is viscous and the sebaceous glands are well developed, the nasal bridge will be thin. This structure of the tip often leads to scarring. The male nose has a rougher shape than the female nose and is therefore usually much larger. There are also aesthetic characteristics, as men and women may have very different ideas of the ideal nose. But if we talk about direct anatomical differences, there is not much difference.

The surgical method itself is also different. Nose tip modeling comes at the expense of a thinner cartilage structure in males. Therefore, surgeons should work more carefully.
